Why Plant-Based Pride?

To protect the global LGBTQIA+ community through reducing Pride’s environmental footprint.

Plant-Based Pride is fundamentally about safeguarding the LGBTQIA+ community around the world from the harms of climate change.

Our world’s changing environment, and the risks this change brings, are amplified among marginalised communities, and this is reflected in several studies and highlighted by several climate and human rights organisations.

As such, we believe Pride has a duty to protect the global community - and our campaign focusses on advocating an immediate move to plant-based food options.

There are many brilliant environmental campaigns launched by Pride organisations worldwide to reduce emissions and plastic waste, however switching away from meat and dairy to plant-based foods not only has the potential to more effectively target these areas, but also targets water use, land use, deforestation and direct in-ocean plastic from discarded fishing nets and ‘ghost’ waste (one of the largest and most harmful sources of plastics in our oceans) to name just a few.

Pride is a movement of empowerment and protection, and in our view it is contradictory to demand equality and justice for the LGBTQIA+ community whilst at the same time ignoring the consequences for the community that come with providing food heavy in meat and dairy.

A Medium Pride Organisation Could Save..

We have three levels of accreditation offering different levels of commitment allowing Pride organisations to both begin their journey with us, or to dive into the highest levels of commitment from the get-go. We understand that organisations have their own challenges and so each level is designed to offer a reasonably achievable stepping stone.

We are able to provide estimates of the current environmental impact of a given Pride organisation, and also possible reductions for each level of accreditation so that organisations can clearly communicate to their community the differences that can be made.
